Monty's Surprise fruit is very large, green-yellow and blushed and striped with red.
It has a tangy flavour, and cooks beautifully; it is somewhat like a Peasgood's Nonsuch.
Discovered in Whanganui by Mark Christensen from The Heritage Foods Research Trust. Who tested it alongside other varieties and has shown it to have extraordinary amounts of phytonutrients, and the skin has the highest levels of beneficial flavonoids of any apple. It has very high levels of procyanidins as well as quercetin flavonoid compounds compared to other apples.
Monty's Surprise apples have demonstrated an ability to suppress the growth of colon cancer cells better than any other apple variety, according to a study by the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research.
