Landscape Design

Beautiful and edible gardens designed well are a pleasure to relax and work in!

The design process starts with concept design and discussion, then moves to developed design if required.

Concept Design

We meet with you on-site, produce a concept design sketch with notes, and discuss options and installation strategies.

The process:

  • We send you our Habitate Landscape Guide, which includes preparation for you to do (or not!) before our first meeting.
  • We meet on-site and discuss your goals, wishes and ideas.
  • We walk the site together, making a site assessment and discussing any immediate thoughts.
  • We then spend two to three hours deepening the site assessment and sketching a concept design to scale on an aerial photo. We may also mark the proposed structures, paths, garden beds and trees on the ground.
  • We then walk through the garden and discuss the concept design with you.
  • We make lists and email you a copy of the concept design.

This concept design may be all you need to develop the garden yourself.
If the design is relatively simple - with no landscaping or structures that require developed design - then we can also supply an estimate for installation services.

This concept design package includes:

  • Our locally produced Homegrown Fruit book, Edible & Useful Trees & Shrubs Booklet, Vegetable Planting Calendar, Orchard Planner, 30-page Habitate Landscape Guide and a scaled aerial image of your property.
  • Optional pre-consultation 45-minute tour of our home garden, where we introduce permaculture garden and landscape systems – bring the family or friends!

$690 GST INCL. + Travel Costs if outside of Dunedin.

Developed Design

Developed design follows concept design (see above) and is where we thoroughly investigate design options and resolve details.

This option is great for garden projects where developed plans are needed for yourself, by other contractors, or for us to work from.

We produce:

  • A concept design for discussion.
  • A detailed developed design showing the layout of the garden, its features, and annotated with types or areas of plants, paths, beds, and structures.

Depending on the needs of the project, we produce:

  • Hardscape layout plan and elevations (cross sections)
  • Planting plans - enough detail for you or us to plant with
  • Water and irrigation plans
  • Soil testing and analysis for fertility and contaminants
  • Soil amendment recommendations and ongoing soil fertility systems
  • Installation timeline and strategy
  • Installation estimates for our install services

The process:

  • We meet (in person or online) to workshop the concept design, considering alternative layouts, additions or new ideas.
  • We carry out further site assessment and develop the design using on-site markups and iterations on paper.
  • We draw up the design and written report, and email it to you.
  • We follow up with a phone call and an on-site meeting if the design has evolved a lot from our last meeting.
  • If needed, we provide an estimate for our installation services.
